What remains of RAF Fersfield today

Eighty years on, Station 554 is still visible in the south Norfolk fields

What survives of RAF Fersfield

The Norfolk Historic Environment Record describes what remains - most of the perimeter track
and dispersal areas survive as farm roads; the runways are largely gone, lifted for hardcore; one hangar survives; and there are ruins of huts and a repurposed operations block [2].

How many buildings survive?

The best record for recording structures and layouts at Fersfield is the carefully curated photo collection at UK Airfields [1] Visit Richard’s excellent site for information and photos of buildings past and present ukairfields.org.uk/fersfield

The hangar that is still in use

The surviving T2 wartime hangar has perhaps the best afterlife of any building on the site: it is now the Fersfield Grain Store, operated by Simpsons Malt, holding more than 30,000 tonnes of malting barley a year on
its way to becoming beer and whisky [3].

The marker

On 8 November 2024, the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust
unveiled a granite marker to the airfield’s history beside
the grain store on Airfield Road, on the south-west side of the old
airfield [3][4]. It is the first permanent public marker the airfield
has ever had.

The racing interlude

Before the concrete went, it had one more life: period film survives of motor-racing meetings held on the airfield in 1951, crowds lining the old runways [7].

Seeing it

In addition to what is on Uk Airfields, more than a hundred photographs of the remains (the crumbling ops
block, the hut ruins, the perimeter track stretching into the crops)
have been taken from public vantage points and published on Geograph
under a Creative Commons licence [6].

The airfield is private land: homes, businesses and a working farm. There is plenty to
see without trespassing, please see Visiting respectfully.
