About this site

Fersfield differs from other local airfields in East Anglia in that not only is the history fading from memory, it was never fully understood at all.

Fersfield’s history was initially classified and then documented in a few book chapters, and articles by local experts, but often with a focus on an operation rather than the overall history.

This site aims to gathers as much of it as we can to honour those who flew and died from here.

Who’s behind it

This site is curated by myself Vicki with the help of local historian Roger Doggett, and my brother Gavin providing technical know how. I grew up near the Airfield and myself and my friends would visit on our bikes, and wonder what went on here.

Two promises

Every fact is sourced, but we appreciate your help. Each history page on this site lists where its information comes from, and primary sources are preferred but hard to find. Sources can differ, so please reach out if you have a correction, or extra information about anything we have posted here.

We respect the landowners. The old airfield is private land, businesses and a working farm. This site never encourages trespassing, and every page about the physical site points visitors to the public rights of way.

The longer game

Beyond telling the story, we are working towards a permanent
memorial to the people of Station 554 - the volunteers of the drone
missions and the crews of the Copenhagen raid among them. When those
plans are ready, more will be shared here.
